Learning to date
How to start dating
Not a glow-up. A two-week plan: places you already use, one conversation, one specific ask.
By Nitin Kumar Khatri · 18 September 2026
You start dating by putting yourself in repeating public hours, speaking once, and then asking for a specific next hour. You do not start by becoming hotter, funnier, or “healed.” Those can happen in parallel. This week: two places you already go. One sentence about the place. If it is easy, one ask with a day and a spot. You must be 18. Catch My Wave helps when you are already somewhere — a Beat from this café or campus, a Wave as a hello, chat if they catch it.
- Start this week, not after you feel ready. Ready is a result.
- Use places you already pay time in: canteen, café, office block, campus.
- One conversation, then one specific ask. Do not collect maybe-threads.
- Drop a Beat when you are out so nearby people can see you are here.
Days 1–7: become findable
Beginners hide and then search “how to start dating” as if a method will teleport a person into the PG. Nobody can find you in a closed room. Eat lunch away from the desk twice. Sit in the canteen instead of taking the plate upstairs. Take the same evening chai twice. You are not hunting. You are entering the city’s default mix.
Talk about what is in front of you. “Is this table always this noisy?” is enough. If they put in earphones, you leave. That is a complete social event. You practised approaching and surviving a no that was not even personal.
Days 8–14: one real ask
If someone already shares a slot with you, ask for a defined extra hour. “I’m getting chai at X on Thursday 6. Want to come?” Give them an easy no: “totally fine if not.” Do not speech about how you never date. Do not make it a four-hour night plan. Public, short, daylight if you can.
Office and campus have extra rules. Do not trap someone at their desk or outside a classroom they cannot leave. Ask when they are free to walk away. If you use Catch My Wave, a Wave with coffee or campus as the intent does some of this work: they catch it only if they want the hello.
What “started” looks like
Started is not a relationship. Started is: you have been in a room with someone on purpose, or you have asked and heard a yes or a no. Either outcome is data. Sitting on the app for a month with zero asks is not starting. It is research.
If fear is the blocker, read fear of rejection. If the blocker is never having sat across from someone, read never been on a date. If you are quiet by nature, start smaller, not never — dating for introverts is the longer path, not an exemption.
How Catch My Wave helps with starting to date
Drop a Beat. See who’s dropping Beats around you. Send a Wave. Chat when they catch it.
A Beat is a photo or a short clip from the place you’re in. Location is stored so people nearby can see it. Other people do not see your pin, the exact time, or a movement trail.
A Wave is a hello with an intent — coffee, chat, hang, campus. Catching is free. Chat opens only if they catch it.
Crossed paths means two Beats probably shared the same real-world context: about 300 metres, posted within about 30 minutes, in the last 24 hours. That is overlap, not proof you stood together.
We do not follow you while the app is open. Your pin is only taken when you share a Beat. You must be 18.
If you want people who are actually around you — this café, this campus, this place — open Catch My Wave, share a Beat, and look.
Questions people ask
Can I start dating if I still live with my parents?
Yes, if you are 18. Keep early meets public and in hours you already go out. You do not have to livestream it at home. You do have to be honest with the other person about constraints.
Should I get a dating app on day one?
Optional extra, not the start. If you have no practice in a room, an app will only move the freeze to chat. Get one repeating place first. Then an app is less of a fantasy.
What if I don’t know who I like yet?
You still start with contact, not a type quiz. Talk to people. Notice who you want a second hour with. Orientation can be clear or still forming. Pressure to pick a lane overnight is not required.

These are the conversational prompts this page is written to answer. The short answer is at the top; Catch My Wave is the nearby option if you want people who already share this place.
